Founded in 1851, this luxury boutique-style hotel in Mayfair offers 129 luxury hotel rooms, suites, and apartments, as well as a seven-bedroom private residence. Quietly powering this top London hotel, we played a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted power during the refurbishment of one of central London’s ‘best-kept secrets.’
Always concerned with improving customer satisfaction, a £15m investment was needed to refurbish 129 bedrooms alongside the launch of a stunning new restaurant with a Michelin-star chef. This large-scale refurbishment included a complete décor revamp, a whole new hard services overhaul and a brand-new kitchen.
During the renovation, the demand for power on-site to the new kitchen increased, and MEMS were tasked with quietly powering this top London hotel by providing a new temporary distribution board for a six to nine-month period until an upgraded mains supply was installed.
Consultants and the hotel had requested the generator be situated on the roof of the building. After a detailed survey, MEMS advised this was not plausible due to the weight restraints of the roof. Noise complaints were also a factor to be considered alongside out of hours refuelling and servicing.
The hotel needed a power supply that would sit roadside and did not disturb the hotel guests or neighbours throughout the temporary power hire period. The hotel describes their rooms as “quiet luxury”, with this in mind, our solution needed to be as quiet as possible. MEMS supplied acoustic sound barriers to surround the generator to ensure that the client’s customers and neighbours had a power solution that was as quiet as possible.
Dispensation from the local council and hotel was granted to sit all MEMS equipment roadside. MEMS provided a 300kVA generator to power the hotels 400A board. Trip hazards were also of concern, to protect members of the public, a short cable run from the road was complete with cable covers.
MEMS monitored the services remotely, in case of an outage to power a call out would be triggered to the MEMS 24-hour manned control room. As a result of a job well done, MEMS received additional project leads as passers-by commented on the professionalism of the equipment and the quality of the installation. The hotel’s new kitchen had no interruption of power and the hotels running from the MEMS generator had no disruption.
