Powering London’s Winter Festival with Reliable Temporary Power
Every year, the Winter Festival transforms London’s Southbank into a magical hub of festive excitement. Stretching along the Thames, the event draws thousands of daily strollers to enjoy pop-up bars, street food stalls and independent craft traders. In previous years, power failures and inadequate support from other suppliers caused significant disruptions, putting the event at risk for this high-profile event. To resolve these challenges, MEMS stepped in, delivering reliable temporary power for the Winter Festival attraction, making sure the event ran flawlessly throughout its duration
OUR SOLUTION
MEMS was awarded the contract following a detailed tender process. Understanding the critical nature of the event, MEMS developed a solution that prioritised resilience and efficiency. The plan utilised three 300kVA three-phase generators running in parallel with redundancy to enhance site reliability.
To further optimise costs, the solution incorporated start-on-demand technology. Each generator was individually fed by 3,000-litre bulk tanks, ensuring continuous operation. Additionally, 25 metres of cable from each machine connected to a 1200A distribution board, enabling any generator to be isolated for maintenance without compromising the site’s power load.
From the central 1200A board, multiple sub-boards powered all attractions, including rides, shops, and catering facilities, ensuring seamless support for the entire four-month festival period.
THE RESULTS
The Winter Festival operated 24/7 for several weeks without any power interruptions—a marked improvement from previous years. MEMS comprehensive service included generator installation, de-installation, servicing, and fuel management, providing peace of mind to the organisers.
